I was not at all sore on Sunday from the previous day’s 12-miler. But Monday morning comes around HELLOoooOOo glutes and hammies. I spent a good chunk of Sunday doing a yoga video, part of a Pilates video, and then biking and lifting. I’m guessing some sort of combination of all of that worked my muscles in new ways.
It’s incredible what a total body workout you can get by NOT RUNNING. I’m not even sure what exactly about Sunday’s assorted cross-training put me over the edge of soreness, but I like it. I like that I’m literally just sitting at my work computer and I can FEEL my butt muscles.
So here’s the Sunday that brought on the hurt:
Core Workout (section 1) of this Cardio Pilates video-
I might’ve kept going with this video, but it’s a library borrow and after the core section it skips and restarts back at the beginning. LOL.
So I swapped in a yoga video and did Sun Salutations and Standing Postures (section 1 and 2) of this Yoga video-
I love this one! It is super easy to follow and they all have Australian accents! Heh.
Then I got to the gym just 50 minutes before closing so I hopped on the bike for a solidly sweaty 30 minutes and then raced through some free weights exercises:
- Dumbbell Chest Press- 25lbs 2sets 15reps
- Dumbbell Row- 25lbs 2sets 12 reps
- Bicep Curl-rotate-Shoulder Press- 20 lbs 8 reps, 15 lbs 10 reps
- Bicep Curl- 15 lbs 10 reps
- Shoulder Press- 15 lbs 10 reps
- Tricep Dip- 2 sets 15 reps
And…done.
I did NOT want to wake up this morning. I think I could’ve stayed in bed all day. But the sun was shining by the time I talked myself into getting up and I went for a 4-mile run to get my blood circulating. I think this is a good soreness recovery strategy. Nothing strenuous, of course. I told myself to go as slow as I wanted. The sun was practically blinding me, too! The weather is incredible. November 9th and 55 degrees! Wow!
MON am Recovery Run
Total Distance: 4 miles
Total Time (get this!): 33:33 (lol)
Average Pace: 8:23 min/mi
Splits: 9:06, 8:19, 8:14, 7:53
Notes: I’m really glad I went. It wasn’t easy and I could’ve skipped the run altogether, but I’m much less sore now and my mood is super sunny.
I will leave you with a few photos from Saturday’s shenanigans. I started a Rock Paper Scissors tournament out at the bar and it really caught on! I love it!
In case you are new, I’m the one in the blue!
Bring on the work week! Happy Monday everyone!

We're having beautiful weather here, too. Gotta appreciate those 55-degree runs before they are gone for a loooong time.
Looks like you had a fun night out. Cute pics.
It is amazing that you can actually get in a better workout by not running... That doesn't change anything for me though ;)
I always find it amusing that I can run for 2+ hours without a single pain the next day, but a 30 minute strength workout and I am struggling to walk/lift my arms, etc.
But you did some serious working out. Way to go! Nice run this AM too. This weather is incredible!
Seriously - the NON running workouts make you realize how many OTHER muscles you have! ha, rough, but feels good!
"they have australian accents" - Lol, this would totally throw me off, I get so amused by accents.
CUTE pictures! Looks likea fun night :)
Total Time (get this!): 33:33 (lol) YES!! Good work.
Wow you earned every bit of that soreness crazy lady..keep up the good work and you will be a lean mean Kenyan Racing machine.
So for the Instant love, I agree with you for romantic love.. But what I was talking about was the love of a mother to her child. The moment the baby is put in your arms you are in LOVE it is amazing and can never be matched. Glad that I can help you want kiddos :) It is FUN!
OMG I felt so out of shape. I am sure it will be better today..
Hugs!! Happy MOnday stud!
33:33 - holy!
I ran hard Thursday night and nothing...and now from yoga on Sat, my shoulders are crying.
literaly..
oh delayed muscle soreness. so good and yet so...sore haha! and this weather is soooo incredible for november. i'm not a fan of cold weather so i hope it stays like this for-freaking-everrrrrr!!
and i am soooo down for shenanigans looks like it was fun! haha :)
I was thinking over the weekend that I could really go for a hardcore workout that wasnt running. Kind of like the hard workouts we used to have in bball! I kind of miss those because they were like 2 hours of death but at the end you felt awesome because you survived! Glad you had a good weekend -Hope those muscles feel better tomorrow!
I have that Pilates video. I had a knee injury for awhile and it was the only "cardio" I could do. The cardio section is totally lame. You didn't miss anything.
i love the pics - and that you had a rock paper scissors tourney ;)
love the pics :) looks like you had fun!!!
I think I will follow your lead and look for a cardio pilates DVD. I would love to find some good workouts now that my legs are out of commission for a while.
Looks like a fun weekend! I love SPR!
super cute pics. looks like a lot of fun. I haven't done a lot of workout dvds, but I like to download free podcasts from itunes.
You are a party animal! Way to tear it up at the bar.
no, no, DON'T bring on the work week! are you nuts? blech!
i always feel pathetic when yoga makes me sore... but since i don't do it regularly it pretty much always does lately. i'm like c'mon body, this is easy compared to running!
soo true that I have been sore lately and it's from cross training not running!
i had my sleepy morning today, really didn't want to get up
i'm just getting back into my strength training too and am feeling muscles i had long since forgotten ... keep it going! :D
